VIDEO: WDEL's Amy Cherry reports.

The southbound side of I-495 could re-open several weeks before Labor Day.

That's the latest word from DelDOT, which says repairs are ahead of schedule.

Crews are wrapping up work to construct new underground foundations for the damaged portion of the bridge. Work on jacking towers to temporarily repair the bridge span has also begun.

The state's transportation agency says if jacking goes as smoothly as the previous work, the southbound side of I-495 could open well in advance of Labor Day though no specific date was given.

The northbound side of I-495 sustained more damage and is still slated to open several weeks after Labor Day.
