The woman and her son arrived at the home, located on the 1900 block of West Newport Pike, about 5:55 a.m. and found signs of a break-in , Cpl. Jeffery Hale said.

While searching the home, Hale said the pair discovered 21-year-old Gregory Alexander sleeping inside a bedroom.

"The male subject woke up, there was a physical confrontation between the female, her son and the subject," he told NBC 10.

During the altercation, the woman pulled out a handgun and fired a single shot, striking Alexander in the buttocks, he said.

Alexander took off, but police said he was apprehended a short time later.

Hale said Alexander was being treated at a hospital will be arraigned on charges including trespassing once he is released.

Both the woman and her son refused medical treatment for minor injuries.

The findings of the investigation into the shooting will be turned over to the Attorney General's office for review, Hale said.
