County to use HUD grant to help poor residents
By Frank Gerace

New Castle County plans to use federal grant money to help keep people from losing their homes.

The County's getting more than 670 thousand dollars in stimulus funding from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, which County Executive Chris Coons says will be available to residents of unincorporated areas who rent their homes, have no other housing options or financial resources and whose incomes are 50 percent or less than the area median.

Those who qualify can get 15 hundred dollars to help pay their rent or utility bills.

A study by the Homelessness Planning Council of Delaware shows about 67 hundred people in the state are homeless, and the number is rising.
