Middletown police are looking for a man who unsuccessfully tried to steal an elderly woman's purse Wednesday night.

The robbery happened about 9 p.m. at the Dove Run Shopping Center, Sgt. Michael Kelly said.

A 71-year-old woman was loading groceries into their vehicle at the Dove Run shopping center when she felt someone pull at her purse, Kelly said.

During a brief struggle with the suspect, he said she was knocked to the ground.

Upon hearing his wife's screams, the husband and other shoppers ran toward the suspect, who took off without the purse.

Kelly said the man fled in a sedan with a Maryland tag operated by a woman.

The victim suffered minor scrapes and was treated at the Middletown Emergency Room.

Kelly said the man was described as being in his 20s with short blonde hair and 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall.

The female suspect is described as being in her 20s with an orange or pink streak in hair and 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Anyone with information can call the Middletown Police Department or Delaware CrimeStoppers.
