New Castle man jailed in store robbery
By Peter MacArthur

A New Castle man is under arrest after police say he ripped off a cigarette outlet Thursday afternoon.

Police say Matthew Gradwell walked into the Fairwinds Cigarette Outlet on Pulaski Highway in Bear.

He reportedly pulled out a large knife from his shorts and demanded money from a 77-year-old clerk.

The clerk refused and pushed the panic alarm and the suspect fled.

Several witnesses say they saw the robber run into a nearby motel room.

Police found Gradwell, plus the knife and a magazine they say he stole, and charged him with robbery and weapons possession.

He's behind bars on $125,000 bail.
