Spicer shooting suspect could face death penalty

A suspect in the shooting death of a Georgetown police officer could face the death penalty under the indictment handed down Monday by the state Attorney General's office.

Derrick Powell of Cumberland, Maryland is accused of shooting patrolman Chad Spicer and another officer as the cops chased Powell and another man, Christopher Reeves, after a shooting at a McDonald's in Georgetown September first.

Spicer died of his wound, while the other officer was wounded, but survived.

Powell, the passenger in a car Reeves was driving, was caught after he broke into a home nearby, and had a 9-millimeter handgun on him.

Reeves turned himself in several days later.

Powell's charged with first-degree murder, assault and several other counts, and Reeves, with failure to stop for an officer and resisting arrest.
