The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded two Delaware companies working on renewable energy projects
almost $4 million total in grants.
Newport's Compact Membrane Systems Inc. is slated to get nearly $3 million for three
programs that remove water from oils.
And Newark's Elcriton Inc. will receive $1 million for its effort to genetically
engineer microorganisms to turn biomass into a renewable fuel.
Both companies are small businesses and had received funding previously from the
Department of Energy to prove their ideas had merit before getting the latest grants. The
current grant money will be used to help take the products to market.
