Del. gang member gets 40 years for fatal shootings
By Associated Press Bookmark and Share

A Latin Kings gang member from Delaware has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for two 2008 fatal gang-related shootings.

Attorneys for 20-year-old Alejandro Rodriguez-Ortiz argued Friday that he had joined the gang because of a difficult childhood and sought "love and acceptance."

Prosecutors said Ortiz had gone through many unsuccessful treatments and therapies already.

Police and prosecutors say Newport resident Ortiz shot and killed 26-year-old Angel Rivera after gang members grew angry with him for allegedly dating a woman whose ex-boyfriend was a Latin Kings member.

They say the second homicide occurred when Ortiz shot and killed 34-year-old Rodrigo Monroy believing he was a member of a rival gang.

Prosecutors say they think Monroy was not a gang member, however.
