NCCo Paramedics, trainees to be laid off
By Frank Gerace Bookmark and Share

Four County Paramedics and 5 trainees will be laid off in the next 2 weeks in a move County Executive Coons says will save almost 350 thousand dollars.

Coons says he regrets the layoffs, but AFSCME local 3911's vote last week against a 5-percent pay cut agreed to by 3 other locals leaves him with no other choice.

Coons is also asking 157 non-union employees to agree to a 5-percent rollback in an effort to close the County's 40 million-dollar-plus Fiscal Year 2010 budget shortfall.

The layoffs take effect May 6th, and won't affect staffing levels, because those being laid off are members of the current Paramedic Academy class and recent graduates still doing field training.
