Safe zone law passes in Wilmington
By Jim Hilgen Share

A measure creating a safe zone for those in Wilmington seeking birth control or abortion counseling passes in City Council.

Under the bill protesters outside healthcare facilities will be allowed no closer to clients than eight feet.

The ordinance also requires that safe zone to be honored within a radius of 100 feet of the facilities doors.

At-Large Councilman Michael Brown calls the measure a violation of free speech and civil rights.

He says this is a battle that should be waged in Dover, or by the state Supreme Court.

Brown accused Council of passing legislation that benefits one entity in the city, Planned Parenthood

He was joined by two other Council members in voting against the measure.
