WDEL's Amy Cherry reports.A long-standing tradition in the City of Wilmington won't be happening this year.
Wilmingtonians will have to find a new way to ring in the New Year.
First Night has been canceled -- so the city can save more than $100,000.
"The city's co-partner, the New Journal ,did pull back this year, will not be spending the resources that it has spent in previous years on First Night."
That's the city's Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz, who says they're looking at ways to revive the celebration to ring in 2012. But she adds -- you can't just blame the city.
"The savings is important in these economic times, but it's just not the only factor. The First Night Board of Directors certainly could've moved forward and held the event."
