VIDEO: Highlights of St. Mark's / Downingtown EastRyley Angeline and Jay Harris each scored two touchdowns as Downingtown East held on for a 26-21 victory over St. Mark's Friday night.
The Cougars, the Philadelphia Inquirer's 6th best AAAA team in the region, found themselves behind early after St. Mark's T.J. Brown capped off a 63 yard opening possession with a 13 yard run to put the Spartans up 7-0.
Following a muffed kickoff that started the ensuing drive at the Downingtown 13, Angeline popped open a 39 yard run, which set up a 9 yard reception from quarterback Kyle Lauletta to even the score after one quarter.
St. Mark's next drive went into Downingtown territory, but could not convert a 4th down. Angeline then fumbled the ball away after a long run, with Marquis Norman recovering for St. Mark's.
A 3-and-out set up the Cougars for their best drive of the night, a 78-yard, 4:30 effort that ended with Angeline's second touchdown, this one a one yard plunge. The extra point was blocked by Brendan Fogerty keeping the score 13-7.
The teams traded turnovers late in the half, with Mike Catalano picking off Lauletta for just the second time this year to stall another drive in Spartans' territory.
Mike Munnelly opened the 2nd half for Downingtown East with an interception, and the Cougars cashed in with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Lauletta to Harris boosting the lead to 19-7.
Brown would bring the score to 19-4 after a 4-yard run capped off a 70-yard drive which included a 31 yard pass from Zach Whitehead to Adam Waegele.
Downingtown East's respond was a 77 yard drive, with Harris taking a wide receiver sweep 4 yards for his 2nd rushing touchdown of the season.
St. Mark's responded with 3:52 remaining, when a Downingtown East blitz was picked up, and Whitehead found Jake Schneider on a 81 yard catch-and-run to make it 26-21.
After picking up a first down, Downingtown was staring at a 3rd and 7 in their own territory when Lauletta launched a pass deep to the left for Harris, who despite excellent coverage by Ed Mendez was able to come up with the 45 yard catch to secure the game for the Cougars.
Downingtown East improves to 6-0, while St. Mark's fell to 4-1.
