Highlights from Caravel's 53-21 win over St. Elizabeth
Darnell Savage's six touchdowns gave the Buccaneers all the offense they needed as Caravel defeated St. Elizabeth 53-21 in the first round of the DIAA Division II state tournament Friday night.

Caravel opened the scoring on the first drive of the game as Savage ran to the outside and into the endzone on a 9-yard rush--2 point conversion no good--to make it 6-0.

St. E's responded on the next drive when Christian Gwynn scored on a QB sneak at the goal line to put the Vikings on top 7-6. It was the first time Caravel trailed all season.

Savage scored again in the 2nd Quarter, this time rushing from 6-yards out for another touchdown--another two point conversion unsuccessful to give the Bucs a 12-7 lead.

The advantage would be erased immediately--Andre Patton returned the ensuing kickoff for 87-yard and the touchdown to put St. E's ahead 14-12.

The see-saw scoring would continue when Savage found a hole in the Vikings' defense and ran another deep run for another touchdown--PAT no good--Caravel regained the lead at 18-12.

With under three minutes to go in the half, Bucs' QB Derrick Grooms and threw a screen pass to Savage, who eluded the defense and took it for 71 yards--two point conversion was good--Caravel led 24-14 with 2:34 left in the half.

The Bucs got the ball back just before the end of the half and Groomes connected with Savage again for a 67 yard touchdown. It was his fifth TD of he half and Caravel took a 32-14 lead into halftime.

St. E's tried to get back in the game on the first drive of the 3rd Quarter but QB Christian Gwynn was intercepted by Pierce Ripanti, who returned it for the pick-six and became the first player other than Savage to score a touchdown for Caravel to put the Bucs up 39-14.

Savage's night wasn't done as he found another hole in the Vikings' defense in the 4th Quarter and he took it down field untouched for 73-yards to put Caravel up 46-14.

Patton would score again on a rushing TD in the 4th Quarter but it was too little too late as Caravel rolled on for a final score of 53-21.

The loss eliminates St. E's from the state tournament. Caravel's semifinal opponent will be determined after Saturday's playoff games.
