The defending Division II football state champions, Indian River, took advantage of costly turnovers by Howard to secure a 35-14 victory Friday night in the first round of the DIAA State Tournament.

Fourth-seeded Indian River (9-2) trailed early on, when Howard's Marvell Watts found the end zone followed by his two-point conversion.

The Indians quickly responded when Marquel Knight knotted the score at eight a piece when he scored a rushing touchdown of his own and Knight was also able to convert for two extra points.

The Indians wouldn't let up, when senior Aarron Moore drove up the field five yards for one of his three touchdowns giving the Indians the 14-8 lead.

Moore felt pretty good after the game, but he told WDEL his team needs to work harder if they want a repeat of last year.

"We need to make sure that we don't make as many turnovers," said Moore.

The Wildcats offense was absent for a majority of the game as they had trouble hanging on to the football.

Moore scored his final touchdown in the game with 8:04 left. Samuel Izzo's kick was good and the Indians continued to make it look easy leading 35-8.

The Wildcats showed some life with a little more than five minutes remaining when Silas Stewart reached the endzone, but the two-point conversion failed.

Howard looked to score again in the final minutes after they recovered an onside kick, but another turnover shutdown any Wildcats' hopes. They finish 8-3 on the year.

Indian River moves on to the semifinal round. The Indians' opponent will be determined after Saturday's first round games are concluded.
