Video: Highlights from the DIAA field hockey state championshipCape Henlopen's Tiara Duffy said she slept for 13 hours last night to prepare for the championship game. When she woke up her hopes and dreams became reality when the defending state champs repeated last year's outcome against Delmar in the DIAA State Field Hockey Final Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings warmed up in T-shirts that stated, "TEAM WORK MAKES DREAMS WORK". The Vikings' collaborative effort did just that as they picked up the 2-1 victory at Milford high school.
Cape (16-1) took control first when Duffy scored the first goal of the game with help from Allie Yeager who dished the assist, giving the Vikings a 1-0 edge to end the first.
Cape earned 10 penalty corners heading into the break and out shot Delmar 6-0.
The Wildcats had a chance to knot the game out of the half with a one-on-one penalty stroke, however, it was shot wide left.
Delmar's Amy Wilson was able to connect shortly after the miss when she launched a goal into the back of the box to knot the game 1-1 at the 19th minute.
Cape held on when Sara Young scored the game-winning goal after a few of her teammates were unsuccessful knocking it through defenders, she found a way with 11 minutes left to play.
Delmar finished the season 14-2 and were unable to seek revenge against Cape for the second championship in a row. The Wildcats also fell to the Vikings in a regular season contest earlier this fall losing 1-3.
The Vikings outscored opponents 80-6 this season and suffered only one loss to Severna Park in Maryland.
