Caravel completed an undefeated season and claimed the state title on their second straight trip to the DIAA Division II Championship game Friday night.

Hodgson entered the game with only one loss and hoped to give Caravel its first, but the Bucs rode the momentum from their run game and survived a late comeback attempt to take home the championship win.

The Bucs took the early advantage on Pierce Ripanti's 4-yard touchdown run, PAT no good. They led 6-0 heading into the 2nd Quarter.

Hodgson looked to respond in the next period, but while driving deep in Caravel territory, Quarterback Raymond Jones was picked off in the endzone by Emmanuel Simms. The Bucs capitalized on the turnover when Sophomore Darnell Savage scored on a 68 yard touchdown run--two point conversion unsuccessful--Caravel led 12-0 with about 6 minutes left to go in the period.

The Bucs were driving just before halftime when Quarterback Derrick Groomes connected with Aaron Hudson for a 28-yard touchdown pass to put Caravel up 19-0 just before the half expired.

Savage got his second TD of the night in the 3rd Quarter on a 9-yard run--PAT blocked--to increase the Bucs' lead to 25-0...that is until the ensuing kickoff when Jeffery May got the Silver Eagles on the board with an 84 yard kickoff return. Hodgson trailed 25-7 with under two minutes in the period.

However, Caravel responded just before the end of the quarter--Savage scored on another 9-yard run to the outside for his 3rd touchdown. Bucs led 31-7 as the 3rd Quarter ended.

Hodgson was driving with less than a minute into the 4th Quarter when Jones lofted it up to Jeff May who took it all the way to the endzone on a 59 yard touchdown pass--2 point conversion good. The Silver Eagles were still behind 31-15.

The Bucs answered right back--Ripanti pushed his way to the goal line and got a 9-yard touchdown run--two point conversion successful--Caravel's lead increased to 39-15 with under 7 minutes to go.

Hodgson was able to fight back though. Jones was able to buy some time on a drive that ended with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ruben Saunders--two point conversion unsuccessful.

The Silver Eagles were still behind 39-21, but a fumble recovery gave Hodgson the ball at the 5-yard line where Jones ran it in for a touchdown--two point conversion successful--it brought the Silver Eagles within 10 points and under 4:30 left in regulation.

However, the Bucs get the ball and run off time off the clock to secure the victory during the final minutes. Caravel finishes the season 13-0. Hodgson picked up their second loss of the season.
