By Tom Lehman 10:11pm, March 20, 2013Firefighters battled a blaze in a warehouse at the entrance to the Port of Wilmington Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters responded to a warehouse occupied by Intercontinental Services on the 1000 block of Christiana Avenue around 4:14 p.m.
Workers on the scene told firefighters that the contained bulk storage of 7000-12000 tons of the chemical compound Sodium Nitrate, an oxidizer and hazardous material which could have worsened the fire and created moderate health hazards.
It took more than 40 minutes to get the blaze under control, but firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to the bulk storage. Officials say walls and insulation were contributing to the fire--not the chemical compound.
The fire is currently under investigation.
