President Obama's call to congress to approve the allocation of $100 million for the BRAIN Initiative is a welcome development says a local neurologist.

Dr. Lanny Edelsohn, a Christiana Care neurology specialist, tells WDEL the proposed funding could help researchers discover more about diseases, disorders and conditions like head trauma, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

"The infusion of new funds clearly will make a difference, so that if indeed we have to wait now 15 or 20 years, hopefully in five to 10 years we'll have a major treatment for Alzheimer's and also the devastating illness of Autism," Edelsohn says.

Edelsohn believes the BRAIN Initiative could help researchers understand why many diseases and disorders occur. He says those breakthroughs are important due to the frequency of patients being diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Autism.
