VIDEO: Highlights and Reaction from Caravel vs. St. Mark'sAfter being no-hit through four innings, Caravel used three bunt singles to spark a 4-run 5th inning to edge St. Mark's 4-3 in a chilly home game Wednesday night.
On a night with wind chills in the 20s and the wind blowing in from center at about 25MPH, St. Mark's ace Billy Phillips looked in control, allowing just two base runners via walks in the first four innings.
After a walk and groundout started the bottom of the 5th for Caravel, a bunt single by Chad Bradford put runners at the corners with 1 out.
Bradford then stole second base just before freshman Brandon Fraley smacked a single to center field, scoring Dennis Robinson and Bradford to put the Bucs ahead 2-1.
Then Tyler Williams played "small ball" again for Caravel, with a bunt single that scored Fraley making it 3-1. Austin Niggebrugge finished the rally with a shallow bloop to left field that dropped in scoring Williams and putting the advantage at 4-1.
St. Mark's rallied in the 6th with an RBI single from John Matthews who later scored on a throwing error, but despite putting two on with two outs in the 7th inning, couldn't get the tying run across when Corey Hart forced a fly out to end the ball game and earn the save for Caravel.
Phillips picked up the loss despite striking out eight in his 5 innings of work.
The win went to Caravel starter Lonnie Funderburk who allowed just 2 runs and 3 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Calvin Scott went 3-4 with an RBI for St. Mark's, while all 5 Caravel hits came in the decisive 5th inning from five different players.
