By Sean Greene 3:48pm, May 17, 2013Ray Gambone pitched eight scoreless innings as Wilmington University stayed alive in the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament with an 8-1 win over St. Thomas Aquinas Friday afternoon.
The top two seeds in the region met in an elimination following losses in the opening round, and Wilmington quickly shook off their shutout Thursday by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
Matt Lopes smacked an RBI single to cap off an 8-pitch at-bat to put the Wildcats out in front 1-0. Jonathan Rodriguez followed with another RBI single, and then Sam Goines hit a sacrifice fly to complete the first inning scoring.
The Wildcats tacked on a run in the second inning on a throwing error, and then picked up two more runs on a Jon Castro sacrifice fly and Lopes RBI single to give Gambone a 6-0 cushion.
Meanwhile, Gambone was cruising on the mound, striking out five while allowing just 2 hits during his 8 innings to improve to 9-1 on the season.
Lopes finished the day 4-for-4 along with the 2 RBI, with Rodriguez and Frank Samluk also adding two hits for the No. 1 seeds in the East.
Wilmington will take on the loser of the Pace vs. Southern New Hampshire game at 3pm Saturday. Depending on how many teams remain and they win, Wilmington may have to play another elimination game at 7pm.
