Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday afternoon that his son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, has had a successful medical procedure in Texas, where he was being evaluated at a cancer center.

The vice president and his wife, Jill, said in a statement Beau Biden, 44, is in great shape and will be discharged Thursday and then return to Wilmington.

Beau Biden arrived on Monday in Houston for tests at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center after becoming weak and disoriented while vacationing in Indiana last week. He was admitted as a patient Tuesday, according to CBS News' Major Garrett.

Authorities say emergency responders were called earlier to the home the attorney general was living at, two weeks prior to his hospitalization.

Joe Biden says his son will follow up with his local physicians in the coming weeks. The vice president canceled three appearances Thursday in Rhode Island and Maine, opting to stay in Houston

There was no immediate word of what type of procedure was performed.

Delaware Department of Justice spokesman Jason Miller said Wednesday that the attorney general had spoken with Chief Deputy Attorney General Ian McConnel and State Prosecutor Kathleen Jennings regarding agency matters.

Miller said Biden discussed office's ongoing efforts to implement initiatives to combat violent crime in Wilmington and New Castle County. He said said the attorney general will speak with McConnel and Jennings again following his return to Wilmington.
