WDEL's Amy Cherry reports.
The accident happened shortly before 8 a.m. on Route 13 near Eaton Road in Townsend. Police say the school bus was stopped on southbound South DuPont Parkway to let children board when it was hit from behind by an SUV.
Mother Melissa Crum witnessed the whole thing. She spoke to NBC 10.
"We saw him come and hit the back corner with is driver's side front end, went under the bus, and then he swerved and swerved right for the kids, and all the kids went running," says Crum.
Her son was on the bus.
"My son was in the backseat, where the car hit and got thrown from his seat and hit his knee and his head," she says.
The driver of the SUV, Curtis Morris of Smyrna, remains at Christiana Hospital in critical condition. Several students were also hospitalized, but their injuries aren't believed to be life threatening.
Police don't believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but the exact cause remains unknown.
"He might have been distracted because we didn't even hear the screeching of brakes or anything," says Crum.
Bus driver Carol Shane of Townsend was wearing her seatbelt and wasn't hurt in the crash.
