Video: Highlights of Sanford vs. Ursuline and reactionWhen two of the best girls basketball teams in the state match up, one could only expect an exciting battle for an entire four quarters.
That is exactly what fans witnessed on Wednesday afternoon, when Sanford played host to Ursuline Academy in a regular season finale.
The Warriors outscored the Raiders in three of the four quarters and played incredible defense from start to finish to hang on to a 56-53 victory.
Sanford (19-1) got off to an early 8-2 lead in the first quarter, but Ursuline's Adrianna Hahn put the Raiders within reach when she scored six of her team's nine points. At the end of one, Sanford led 10-9.
In the second, Sanford's Alison Lewis put the Warriors ahead by seven, when she completed a three-point play followed by an outside jumper to give Sanford a 21-14 lead.
Ursuline's Alyssa Irons scored on back-to-back threes and the Raiders cut the lead to two points, but Shauntel Williams drained a three of her own to give Sanford a 25-20 edge going into halftime.
After the break, Hahn knotted the score at 32 a piece when she hit one of her four 3-pointers of the game. Although Ursuline outscored Sanford 19-14 in the third, the Warriors still held on to a 40-39 edge going into the final quarter.
With a 1:21 left in the game, Lewis drove to the hoop, caused a foul and completed another three-point play to give Sanford a 54-51 advantage. Hahn scored on a floater and the Raiders trailed 54-53 with less than a minute remaining.
Lewis, who was perfect at the line, got fouled with 16 seconds to play and extended the lead back to three points.
Ursuline had two opportunities to knockdown behind the arc shots with plenty of time but both missed to secure the Sanford victory.
Sanford was led by Lewis' 22 points. Chrishyanah Alston added 13 points and Taylor Samuels chipped in 11 points.
Ursuline's Hahn led all scorers with 25 points, but the Raiders fell to 16-4 to close out the regular season.
