By Sean Greene 7:24pm, March 14, 20141st Team All-CAA performer Kelsey Buchanan scored 21 points to lead Delaware back from a double-digit deficit to defeat Northeastern 63-61 in the Quarterfinal Round of the CAA Tournament Friday.
Delaware found itself down 10 points with 14:23 remaining after Samanatha Defreese's jumper capped off a 12-0 Huskies run to lead 43-33.
Erika Brown then hit a pair of three-pointers to spark a 10-2 retort to get the Blue Hens within a basket just four minutes later.
The game would remain razor close the rest of the way, as Delaware finally clawed their way into a 49-all tie on a basket by Buchanan with 7:12 left.
The next six minutes saw Northeastern's lead fluctuate between 0 and 3 points, but the Blue Hens could never take the lead until Brown converted a steal into a layup with 1:31 remaining to jump ahead 60-58 after finishing off a conventional three-point play.
Buchanan followed with a pair of free throws to put Delaware ahead by four, but it would get closer again when Jewel Tunstell hit her first free throw, only to miss the second but have it converted into a basket by Defreese with 24 seconds left.
Courtni Green was fouled, but made only one of her two free throws, leaving the door open for the Huskies with the last possession down 2.
Northeastern's Amencie Mercier finished with 8 points, but her last second shot clanged off the rim into the hands of Shanice Johnson, and the Blue Hens survived to reach the semifinals.
Joy Caracciolo picked up a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds for Delaware, while Buchanan's 8 rebounds matched the advantage Delaware (19-9) had on the boards on the evening.
Jewel Tunstell had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Northeastern (12-14).
