You can call the Padua cheerleaders National Champions.

The third-year competitive program finished first in the High School Division of the Grand National Competition in Virginia Beach last weekend. The Pandas defeated 12 other squads to take home their first ever title, and tri-captain Carmella Cinaglia said it was an emotional moment when they found out they'd won.

"I started crying right away. We all jumped up and were hugging everybody. I completely forgot to go up and get the banner. All three captains ran up and you couldn't wipe the smiles off of our faces."

Emily Erdmann said they picked up energy, and some nerves, from performing against some top national talent.

"The routine we have we were able to hit really, really strong. But each time you go somewhere new, it's always going to be a different experience. The environment was something different, and we got energy from it."

Before their competition season where they also won their first state title, Padua cheered the Salesianum football team to a title, and Kaitlyn Markey said the Sals set the bar high for them.

"We saw that they won, and we wanted to continue that Sallies and Padua tradition of winning all of the championships (laughs)."
