Delaware makes the top 10 list of best states for veterans.

WalletHub, a personal finance network, deems Delaware as the 7th best state for military retirees.

CEO of WalletHub, Odysseas Papadimitriou tells WDEL that many people don't realize service members retire from the armed forces in their forties and then have to gain new employment.

Papadimitriou says the Delaware Air Force Base's presence may have a positive impact on retirees.

"Definitely, that seems to have helped with the veterans' job opportunities, where employers are familiar with the skills and the strengths military people can bring to the private workforce. Therefore they are actively seeking them. And in terms of veteran-owned businesses, Delaware is right in the middle of the country, at number 26," Papadimitriou said.

Papadimitriou explains some of the benefits former servicemen and servicewomen find here.

"So when we looked at Delaware, some of its strengths are around - obviously - the state and local sales tax, which do not exist, and therefore it ranks number one in the country. It also ranks number eight in terms of veteran job opportunities," Papadimitriou said.
