The Lewes and Rehoboth Beach Fire Departments responded to incident Wednesday night at about 7:30 p.m.
Two people on board the plane appeared to be shaken up, but they were not injured.
The plane was fully intact after landing on the sand.
The pilot is reportedly from Selbyville, and was up for a short flight between Ocean City and the Sussex County Airport in a Cessna 152.
It's believed he curved inland to try to land at Georgetown when engine trouble developed with the plane and he returned to look for a place to land on the beach.
The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing the incident.
Delaware State Police and the Department of Natural Resources also sent personnel to the scene.
