HS Football Preview - McKean

By Brandon Bossert 9:23pm, August 22, 2014
McKean comes into 2014 with a new coach and new quarterback.

The Highlanders finished the 2013 campaign 5-5 after a strong 5-2 start that included three shutouts. The last two losses of the season came at the hands of title game combatants Hodgson and St. Georges.

Matt Carre will take over as the head coach of McKean after Michael Ryan left to coach DMA after twelve years at the helm of his alma mater. Carre says the biggest challenge as a first year coach is getting to know your new players and finding out who can fit into the scheme.

Carre is a Howard graduate, and a former All-Ivy League player at Penn. He spent one year as a coach at Kings College, and four seasons as an assistant coach at Howard.

Michael Layell will take over at quarterback after the departure of Darius Jones. Layell will be making the switch from wide receiver to quarterback. He says his toughest test as quarterback will be making the right reads.

McKean also has offensive threats in senior running back Jaleel Heyward, and junior wide receiver Dwayne Saunders.
