"We've decided to make a change, as you all know. We're saying goodbye to the winningest coach in the history of the Philadelphia Eagles."
One year ago Lurie announced at his annual post-season press conference that he was disappointed in last year's 8-8 mark, but saying he wanted to give Reid a second chance.
Reid had suffered through three non-winning seasons in his first twelve seasons as coach, and each time he followed with at least a playoff appearance. But despite emptying his checkbook with big-ticket free agents like Nnamdi Asomugha and Jason Babin, Lurie watched his team plummet from 3-1 to a team which lost 11 of its last 12 games.
Lurie's trust in Reid is why he waited so long.
"I promised to myself that I would wait until all the games were played, every factor was taken into consideration, and literally I informed Andy this morning at 9am in the morning."
Reid leaves the franchise as its all-time leader in wins with a 130-93-1 record, 6 NFL East Titles, 5 appearances in the NFC Championship, and a Super Bowl defeat to New England in 2004.
Howie Roseman will remain as the team's General Manager, with Lurie giving Roseman credit for a 2012 draft which has already netted starters Fletcher Cox, Mychal Kendricks, and Nick Foles.
As for a replacement for Reid, Lurie says the Eagles will not be in a hurry, and he has already spent "about a month" researching possible replacements he intended to begin contacting following the press conference.
"There's some outstanding college coaches out there, there's outstanding coordinators out there, there's outstanding coaches who used to coach in the National Football League out there, no stone unturned and open to it all."
