Billy Rawstrom is no Abe Froman, but he is the king of the 2019 Delaware Burger Battle held Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Rockford Park in Wilmington.
Rawstrom's Maiale Deli and Salumeria on Lancaster Pike took home the Critic‘s Choice award for both alternative burger and beef burger at the 8th annual sold-out event benefitting the Food Bank of Delaware and Delaware Prostart.
It's been a big year for Maiale, which is Italian for pig. They not only took home the two big critics' awards at Burger Battle but also were hosts to Food Network personality Guy Fieri and his popular show“'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”
"Today for the Delaware Burger Battle, we did a house ground beef, and we topped it with some of our homemade prosciutto that we glaze with honey. We always try to incorporate a little bit of our stuff into the burger battle."
Maiale makes mostly pork-centric products such as homemade sausage, salami, and cured meats.
Rawstrom admitted to getting his deli's moniker 'sausage king of delaware' from a certain 1980s Chicago -based film.
"When I had [the van] behind you, Maiale Cured Meats wasn't a great 'Hey, I can remember that down the side of the road.'
"I was watching Ferris Bueller, and I heard him go 'You're the sausage king of Chicago?' and I thought if I just made it Delaware that's something when you're driving down the road you can easily remember if you see my van or my food truck."
