A 21-year-old man was charged with carrying an illegal firearm after Newark Police responded to a motel where a homicide occurred just days prior for complaints of a disorderly party.

According to authorities, Deonte Lewis, 21, of Newark, was the only person over the age of 21 years old among a group of 12 individuals which also included five minors in a room at the Red Roof Inn at 1119 South College Avenue around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

A search of the room revealed alcohol, marijuana, and a handgun with an obliterated serial number, police said.

Lewis was charged with possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, providing alcohol to minors, and possession of marijuana. He was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $25,002 cash bond.

Police additionally charged 19-year-old Brandon Hagler, of Newark, and a 17-year-old male juvenile with underage consumption of alcohol and possession of marijuana. Both were released of their own recognizance.

Police said this incident was not related to the homicide that occurred at the same motel over the previous weekend.
