A New York man was arrested on allegations he stole almost $3,000 worth of good from a store at the Dover Mall, authorities announces Wednesday.

According to officials, Joel Cordero and a second male suspect were stopped around 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, by a store security officer as they attempted to leave the Macy's without paying for $2,825 in merchandise.

The pair caused minor injuries to the store employee in an ensuing fight, and the unidentified suspect fled in a white Lexus already occupied by two other individuals, police said. Cordero was apprehended at the scene and all merchandise was recovered.

Police said they determined he was also wanted on similar charges out of New Jersey.

Cordero was charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy, and  third-degree assault for the September incident in Dover. He was also held as being a fugitive wanted in another state, and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $5,500 bond.
