New Castle County's Register of Wills is seeking higher office.
Ciro Poppiti III announced his intention to run for New Castle County Council president, telling the the New Castle County Democratic Executive Committee around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.
Poppiti, a Democrat, told WDEL he plans to spend the next three months getting organized and will officially announce his candidacy in January.
"Honestly, we have such an all-star team in terms of other council members, they sort of inspired me. It's a team I want to join. Without being the boss, I think I really want to lend my talents to do the good things we’re already doing," he said.
Poppiti will face incumbent New Castle County Council President Karen Hartley-Nagle, whose first few years in office were riddled with controversy, including allegations of harassment exposed by WDEL, which cost county taxpayers more than $150,000.

According to the Delaware Department of Elections, Hartley-Nagle has filed to run for re-election. No Republican candidates have announced their intention to run for the office.
