U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D - DE) was honored with a national service award at an event in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, February 11, 2020.
Coons received the John S. McCain Service to Country Award presented by Voices for National Service at their 17th annual awards program.
The McCain award's namesake was its first recipient.
Coons was honored for his efforts to support funding for the AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs.
Coons is also a co-sponsor of the ACTION for National Service Act which increases opportunities for service across the country.
The legislation also provides young people with the chance to get hands on experience in a variety of fields through national service programs.
The federal government would reciprocate that commitment by helping those volunteers pay for college.
