Pennsylvania State Police say three people are dead and eight others injured after a passenger van crashed on rainy U.S. Route 1 southbound north of the Newark Road interchange at Toughkenamon on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.
The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. and arriving Avondale firefighters immediately declared a mass casualty incident which brought ambulances from across Chester, Delaware and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania and from the Hockessin Fire Company in New Castle County.
The eight injured were taken to Christiana and Crozer-Chester hospitals.
There is no word on their conditions.
Pennsylvania troopers say the roadway was closed for about five hours while accident investigators tried to determine the cause of the wreck.
