In a year where it looks like the final playoff spots will be as competitive as ever, every win matters in Delaware high school football.
Wilmington Friends avenged last year's loss to the Academy of New Church, and at 4-2, they're still very much alive in their playoff chase. That's one of the two games I missed last week, with Milford's loss to CR (try to figure out that Dover game) and Delmar's win over then-undefeated Lake also crossing me up.
I'll take 86% any week, but the goal is perfect, so here comes a 7th attempt.
Saint Mark's and DMA clash in another one of those games shaping the Division 2 landscape, while any time Sussex Central and Sussex Tech get together, one, or both, are always thinking playoffs.
The best part of this week? Zero out of state games.
SEAN GREENE – WDEL Sports Director - Last Week 19-3 (86%), Season – 107-30 (78.1%)
Friday, October 18
Glasgow (2-4) at A.I. duPont (5-1) - 6:00
SEAN GREENE – A.I. duPont 28-20. Tigers can't be caught looking ahead to next weekend's critical showdown with Howard. Glasgow is 3-3 on the field (Newark forfeit) and nearly clipped Mount Pleasant last week.
Red Lion (4-2) at Dickinson (0-6) - 6:00
SEAN GREENE – Red Lion 35-6. Lions continue to fly under the radar, but they're another team with a big game next week (Archmere) who needs to take care of business quickly.
Conrad (3-3) at Brandywine (4-2) - 7:00
SEAN GREENE – Brandywine 27-10. Another team that can lock in a .500+ season with a victory. Bulldogs make it 4 straight wins.
Caesar Rodney (2-4) at Cape Henlopen (1-5) - 7:00 (Delaware 105.9FM)
SEAN GREENE – Caesar Rodney 20-14. Riders squashed Milford's excitement quickly last week. Both teams have played better than their records at time, this could be close.
FSMA (2-3) at Wilmington Charter (0-6) - 7:00
SEAN GREENE – FSMA 20-14. This might be Wilmington Charter's last best chance for a victory. Both teams lost by a similar score to Conrad, so maybe home lights can inspire the Force?
Concord (2-4) at Caravel (5-1) - 7:00
SEAN GREENE – Caravel 28-27. Caravel goes hunting for a 3rd division 1 win, but it's against a Concord team that gave Woodbridge all they wanted in a 13-6 game earlier this month. Beware, Bucs.
Saint Mark's (4-2) at DMA (5-1) - 7:00 (WDEL 101.7FM/AM1150)
SEAN GREENE – DMA 26-21. We're had a great run of games on WDEL this season. Seahawks have won 4 straight, while Saint Mark's got back on the bike after back-to-back losses. Devon Green could be the difference.
Polytech (2-4) at Dover (2-4) - 7:00
SEAN GREENE – Dover 35-12. Dover did not use Javon Peace as much as they could have in the first half last week against Smyrna. Can they run the table and find a way back into the dance?
Delmar (4-2) at Indian River (1-5) - 7:00
SEAN GREENE – Delmar 35-6. The Wildcats have been a tricky team to figure out this year, but they should keep rolling towards that Week 10 showdown with Woodbridge for the Henlopen South title.
Lake Forest (5-1) at Seaford (1-4) - 7:00
SEAN GREENE – Lake Forest 29-6. Lake shakes off their first loss with a road victory.
Milford (3-3) at Smyrna (4-2) - 7:00 (ESPN930AM/102.1FM)
SEAN GREENE – Smyrna 28-6. Milford fell back to earth with a tough came at CR, and now their offense has to deal with Debo Williams.
Sussex Tech (3-3) at Sussex Central (5-1) - 7:00
SEAN GREENE – Sussex Central 27-6. Central won this game 25-0 last year as they started their roll to the state title, this feels like a similar spot.
Laurel (3-3) at Woodbridge (6-0) - 7:00
SEAN GREENE – Woodbridge 42-14. Some new names added to Woodbridge's roster this week could make them even stronger going forward.
Appoquinimink (3-3) at Middletown (5-1) - 7:30
SEAN GREENE – Middletown 24-8. This crosstown rivalry has yet to produce a truly great game, but both were playoff teams last year, and Appo is on the ropes after their loss to St. Georges last week.
Saturday, October 19
Howard (5-1) at Newark (2-4) - 10:30
SEAN GREENE – Howard 28-7. Wildcats have a home practice field again, but Newark's Bermuda grass shouldn't slow them down much.
Hodgson (6-0) at Delcastle (0-6) - 11:00
SEAN GREENE – Hodgson 49-6. Hoping both teams get out of this healthy, the Cougars still have some chances to win going forward.
Tower Hill (6-0) at Saint Andrew's (4-2) - 1:00
SEAN GREENE – Tower Hill 27-7. Hillers have played the past 2 weeks a little closer than you might have thought, while Saint Andrew's enters the tough Tower/Friends double on their schedule.
Mount Pleasant (3-3) at William Penn (3-3) - 1:00
SEAN GREENE – William Penn 22-8. Colonials look to stop their 2-game losing streak and begin a playoff push.
Saint Elizabeth (2-4) at Archmere (4-2) - 2:00
SEAN GREENE – Archmere 21-6. Auks have dropped 2-straight after their 4-0 start. Losing to Woodbridge and DMA aren't black eyes, but a loss here might be a premature end to their playoff hopes.
McKean (2-4) at Chrisiana (1-5) - 2:00
SEAN GREENE – McKean 20-6. McKean's win over Glasgow shows the potential of this team, but this looks like one of the more even games on the schedule this week.
Friends (4-2) at Tatnall (1-5) - 2:00
SEAN GREENE – Friends 28-6. Another team with no margin for error at this point.
