Delmar's Logan Walls goal vs. Cape Henlopen

Delmar's Logan Walls scores a goal against Cape Henlopen

It's the halfway point of the fall sports season, and nearly as many questions remain as answers.

Who can give Hodgson a run in Division 1 football? What do you do to the bottom half of the volleyball and Division 2 football rankings?

Here's our best guesses, but as this fall has proven, upsets are in the air.

FOOTBALL

Division 1

1) Hodgson (5-0, Sept. 23: 1)

2) Middletown (4-1, 4)

3) Smyrna (3-2, 5) W

4) Salesianum (3-2, 2)

5) Sussex Central (4-1, 6)

6) St. Georges (3-2, 9)

7) William Penn (3-2, 10)

8) Dover (2-3, 3)

9) Appoquinimink (3-2, 8)

10) Sussex Tech (2-3, 7)

DROPPED OUT: None

Two weeks of results have only helped but entrench Hodgson as the favorite at the midway point of the season... From there, some logic is beginning to take place, as a chain can be worked with Hodgson beating Middletown, who won over Smyrna, who defeated Salesianum and Sussex Central... The toughest challenge is what to do with Milford's upset of Dover after losing by 14 to Cape and 28 to Sussex Tech... The instinct is to drop Dover, but not out of the top 10, and see how Milford responds against CR, and they'll get their chance to earn a ranking with Smyrna and Sussex Central following that.

GAME TO WATCH:  No. 8 Dover at No. 3 Smyrna (Friday, 7:00, WDEL) - Last week, this felt like it would be the likely Henlopen North Championship Game. A Smyrna victory could turn the conference into a runaway as the Eagles have just Milford in terms of potentially dangerous teams left after this one. A loss for Dover would drop them to 2-4, not insurmountable, but they'd HAVE to run out, with Sussex Tech and Sussex Central still looming.

Division 2

1) Woodbridge (5-0, 1)

2) Lake Forest (5-0, 9)

3) Friends (3-2, 2)

4) Howard (5-0, 4)

5) Caravel (4-1, 5)

6) Tower Hill (5-0, 3)

7) Delaware Military Academy (4-1, 10)

8) Delmar (3-2, 8)

9) Archmere (4-1, 6)

10) Saint Mark’s (3-2, 7)

DROPPED OUT: None

Wilmington Friends becomes the keystone to many of these teams, with their split results against Lake Forest and Delmar, plus loss to Woodbridge... Going back to the well of Tower Hill and Howard that the strength of Division 2 schedule makes it tricky to sort out just how good they are... Another intriguing result was Tower Hill's 16-8 win at home against Red Lion, who lost by 28 to DMA, that put some shine on DMA's 28-point win over the Lions.

GAME TO WATCH: No. 8 Delmar at No. 2 Lake Forest (Friday, 7:00) - A chance to verify Lake Forest's win over Wilmington Friends, or we're left with some more strange score triangles. A loss would be a 3rd for Delmar, who still has Woodbridge to play in Week 10.

VOLLEYBALL

1) Saint Mark’s (9-0, 2)

2) Ursuline (6-2, 4)

3) Padua (8-2, 3)

4) Conrad (10-0, 5)

5) Newark Charter (9-0, 6)

6) Archmere (8-2, 1)

7) Indian River (8-2, 8)

8) Wilmington Charter (4-5, X)

9) Caesar Rodney (6-3, X)

10) Appoquinimink (6-2, 9)

DROPPED OUT:  Tower Hill (3-7, 7), Smyrna (7-3, 10)

Logic goes out the window in what has been a very balanced race for the last 3 slots in the top 10. Could easily make cases for DMA, Friends, and Tatnall to be included in the rankings.

GAME TO WATCH: No. 5 Conrad at No. 7 Archmere (Tuesday, 6:15) - The Red Wolves only regular season game against one of the Catholic powers, could be their biggest match before the showdown with Newark Charter. Archmere needs this and a Newark Charter win over the Red Wolves to force a 3-way tie for the DSAC crown.

FIELD HOCKEY

Division 1

1) Cape Henlopen (7-1, 1)

2) Polytech (4-2-1, 2)

3) Padua (6-2, 3)

4) Wilmington Charter (5-2-1, 4)

5) Concord (6-2, 5)

DROPPED OUT: NONE

No changes here, as all of the losses were to themselves or Division 2 teams. Smyrna and Dover are also in the discussion.

GAME TO WATCH:  No. 1 Cape Henlopen at Smyrna (Thursday, 4:00) - Curious to see how Smyrna stacks up against the Vikings, the Eagles have had solid results, short of the Delmar game against a team that is dominating everyone.

Division 2

1) Delmar (8-0, 1)

2) Tower Hill (5-2-1, 2)

3) Indian River (9-0, 3)

4) Lake Forest (5-1-1, 4)

5) Sanford (5-0-2, X)

DROPPED OUT: Caravel (6-4, 5)

Caravel hasn't done much wrong, but Sanford's ties against Tower Hill and Wilmington Charter plus win over Concord needed to find a space in the Top 5.

GAME TO WATCH:  Friends at No. 5 Sanford (Thursday, 7pm) - Lights are coming to Sanford for a special occasion. A tricky match-up for the Warriors who also face tough unranked squads Archmere and Tatnall.

BOYS SOCCER

Division 1

1) Salesianum (7-7, 1)

2) Appoquinimink (6-1-1, 2)

3) Caesar Rodney (7-2, 3)

5) Wilmington Charter (6-2, 5)

5) Sussex Tech (5-3-1, X)

DROPPED OUT: Cape Henlopen (4-2-1, 4)

Cape slips out after tying Sussex Tech and losing to Sussex Central. Sneaking the Ravens in over Central due to the Golden Knights' loss to Milford.

GAME TO WATCH: No. 2 Appoquinimink vs. No. 1 Salesianum (Saturday, 1:00 at 76ers Field House) - Last Saturday the Sixers were the main attraction at the Blue Coats' new complex, this Saturday it's the two best soccer programs in Division 1.

Division 2

1) Archmere (11-0, 2)

2) Wilmington Friends (8-0-2, 1)

3) Newark (7-2, X)

4) Indian River (6-1-1, 3)

5) Tower Hill (7-1-1, X)

DROPPED OUT: Brandywine (7-2, 4), Saint Andrew's (4-2-1, 5)

Saint Mark's is right in the mix for one of the ranked slots as well... Newark's move to Division 2 could shake up the state tournament this year.

GAME TO WATCH: Tower Hill at Saint Andrew's (Saturday, 12:30) - Tower Hill took round 1 2-0, will things change on the natural grass in the shadow of Noxontown Pond?
