A 39-year-old Wilmington man police believed to be the mastermind behind several bank robberies in a variety of locations in Delaware has been arrested.
According to Delaware State Police, Michael J. Wheeler committed a series of bank robberies in Felton, Middletown, and the Wilmington area while staying ahead of the police for two weeks at locations including:
- August 2, 2019, WSFS Bank at 105 Irish Hill Road, Felton
- August 5, 2019, M&T Bank at 399 East Main, Middletown
- August 5, 2019, Wells Fargo at 814 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington
- August 8, 2019, TD Bank located at 2502 Marsh Road, Wilmington (attempted)
Police said they believe Wheeler was also the brains behind four robberies which occurred between July 16 and August 6 in out-of-state jurisdictions in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Each time, Wheeler allegedly handed a note to a teller demanding cash, and fled without causing injury. He imply the presence of a weapon at least once, police said, but one was never displayed.
On Wednesday, August 14, 2019, everything came to a head in the area of Rivers End Drive, where investigators and members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force caught up to Wheeler around 2 p.m. and took him into custody.
He was charged with first-degree robbery, wearing a disguise during commission of a felony, three counts second-degree robbery--including a charge from Middletown Police, and attempted second-degree robbery. He was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $70,000 secured bond.
