Martha Gilman is usually involved in the secretive process ahead of the announcement of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce Gilman Bowl small business leadership award winner.
But this year it was Gilman who was left in the dark.
The daughter of the award's namesake - Marvin S. Gilman - was this year's recipient at the 20th annual Superstars in Business program on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington.
Gilman could not believe that colleagues, friends and even her son were able to keep her award secret, going to such lengths as creating fake scripts to make sure the ruse ran to the end.
"They all got me. This was a total surprise. I couldn't be prouder."
This years Superstars in Business winners include the Delaware Humane Association (Nonprofit Category), Promo Victory (1-24 Employee Category), Cover & Rossiter (25-59 Employee Category) and Kuehne Company (60-150 Employee Category).
Awards of Excellence will be given to Exceptional Care for Children (Nonprofit Category), Holmes Smith Consulting Services, Inc. (1-24 Employee Category), Ferris Home Improvements (25-59 Employee Category) and Home Instead Senior Care (60-150 Employee Category).
