A late night crash on Interstate 95 in Wilmington on Sunday caused excessive damage to sections of a jersey barrier, prompting a closure of travel lanes in the immediate area.
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) reported the closures on Monday, March 26, 2018, citing that five sections of the concrete structure, in the area of Exit 6/Maryland Avenue, had been compromised when the accident occurred.
As a result of the damage, DelDOT advised that a left lane would be closed indefinitely on both northbound and southbound I-95.
The initial closures caused significant backups for traffic headed into Wilmington on Monday morning, extending for several miles back towards DE-273/Christiana Road, for northbound traffic, as well as towards DE-3/Marsh Road, for southbound travelers.
DelDOT suggested that motorists use Interstate 495 as an alternate route, during the course of the unplanned closure.
Delaware State Police did not initially provide details with regard to the cause of the accident, or the vehicles involved.
