Was the Dogfish Head merger with Boston Beer, the makers of Sam Adams, inevitable?
"Boston Brewing is sort of the original craft brewer, and so the two are very complimentary it gives both brands a greater opportunity for growth," said Charles Elson, Professor of Finance at the University of Delaware.
Elson tells Del-AWARE that he's not surprised about the merger.
"It's a great brand, and I think going with another strong brewery gives them the opportunities that they really couldn't do as long as they remained independent. I love the brand. I think everyone loves the brand, and it will give the brand a greater chance for growth and survival," said Elson.
Elson adds in a competitive business, support from a large organization is needed, and that the merger is good for consumers because it will mean a greater chance of survival.
