U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists found an adult long-horned beetle in a Cassava shipment that arrived at the Port of Wilmington from Costa Rica last month.
Long-horned beetles are wood-boring insects native to Central America that can do a lot of damage to trees.
Also in June, CBP agents found an adult weevil in a shipment of pineapples from Guatemala. Weevils cause widespread damage to food crops.
In both cases, USDA officials directed importers to fumigate the containers in which the bugs were found.
