A fight at the Sussex Tech vs. Cape Henlopen boys basketball game led to a finish that featured just three total players on the court.
According to reports from a spectator and the Cape Gazette, the fight broke out midway through the third quarter, with Cape leading by 12 points.
After sorting out the melee, the officials ejected all but three players on each team.
National Federation of High Schools rules allow competition to continue with less than the normal five players, so the game resumed 3 vs. 3 at full-court.
Sussex Tech ended up rallying for a 63-62 win, but at that point due to foul attrition, they were down to two players, while Cape Henlopen had just one player left on the court.
The ejected players could all face suspensions, depending on the types of fouls issued during the fight.
Sussex Tech improved to 8-4, while Cape Henlopen dropped to 4-7.
UPDATE: Sussex Tech has put out a statement on the fight.
"Sussex Technical High School is committed to the highest standards for our students and athletes. The incident at last night’s basketball game does not reflect the Raven values of fair play and sportsmanship. Sussex Technical High School does not condone the behaviors exhibited on the court. Sussex Tech is working with Cape Henlopen to review the incident. Our administration is investigating and will take appropriate action when that process is completed."
