A handgun and almost 1,500 rounds of ammunition were found hidden among household goods in a box destined for Honduras out of the Port of Wilmington.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials announced Tuesday, October 15, 2019, the discovery made on Friday, October 4. Authorities said a mobile X-ray device was used to scan 200 cardboard boxes in a shipping container, leading to the discovery of two anomalies.
The anomalies turned out to be a disassembled Taurus 9mm handgun wrapped separately in aluminum foil, and 1,498 rounds of 9mm and .22-caliber ammunition wrapped in foil and packaged inside Irish Spring soap boxes and other small containers.
An investigation into to origins of the weapon remained ongoing.
