A 22-year-old New Castle man has been charged with murder in connection to the death of a three-year-old boy.

According to New Castle County Police, officers were dispatched Monday to the unit block of 550 South DuPont Highway for reports of an unresponsive child at the Castlebrook Apartments, in the care of Taha Hassan El-Abbadi.

Authorities said they arrived to find the victim had unstable vital signs, and he was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment. On Thursday, August 22, 2019, the boy died.

Police said an investigation led detectives to charge El-Abbadi with first-degree child abuse, and he was initially committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $60,000 cash-only bond. He's since been additionally charged with first-degree murder by abuse or neglect, and is currently awaiting arraignment on the new charge.
