A 31-year-old New York man was sentenced to 23 years in prison for a 2017 murder, the Delaware department of Justice announced Friday.

According to DOJ officials, Sandy Lashley, of Queens, shot and killed Allen Melton, of Wilmington, when Melton attempted to break up a fight between his girlfriend and Lashley's female friend, Latesha Favors, of Wilmington, along Cedar Street in September 2017.

Melton, shot multiple times in the torso and legs, died at Christiana Hospital. His murder forced the shut down of a portion of Browntown for a time while police hunted for Lashley, who police believed to have been barricaded inside a home in the area of Cedar and Anchorage streets.

Lashley pled guilty in May to second-degree murder and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.
