A pedestrian was killed in Claymont early Friday morning, according to Delaware State Police.

Authorities said the victim was struck just before 3 a.m. on August 9, 2019, along Philadelphia Pike in the area of Commonwealth Avenue. An operator flipped the vehicle on its side, but was able to climb out before rescue crews arrived.

The Claymont Fire Company posted to Facebook that, as they were attending to the operator, they spotted the pedestrian in a nearby fast food restaurant parking lot.

The driver was transported to Wilmington Hospital, while the pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene.

All lanes of Philadelphia pike are closed in the area between Commonwealth Avenue and Harvey Road. Motorists should avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.

An investigation is in its early stages and ongoing. This story will be updated as more information is released.
