This is Rail Safety Week, and Newark police have some tips designed to keep you from running afoul of trains.
The department is one of more than 500 participating in Operation Clear Track, whose stated goal is to raise awareness of the importance of rail safety and help keep you safe near railroad crossings and along rights-of-way.
Never walk on train tracks, because by the time an engineer sees you, it's too late for the train to stop.
Always expect a train at a railroad crossing, and remember train tracks are private property--trespassing on them in Newark is a misdemeanor punishable by fines and possible jail time.
