The University of Delaware's UDairy Creamery is unveiling a new item for its menu board - Delaware Gold cheese.
The Colby style cheese is debuting on Monday, October 21, 2019 and will be available at the Creamery's retail stores in Newark and Wilmington, and online.
"It's got a really buttery flavor, it has notes of colby and cheddar but it's perfect for a snacking cheese and to have on your cheese board or for making mac & cheese or grilled cheese it's really great because it melts well too," said Creamery Director Melinda Shaw.
Shaw says the Creamy's dip into cheese got started with the opening earlier this year of the Genuardi Food Innovation Laboratory.
"Since then we've been doing test batches and working with our brand new equipment," said Shaw.
The Creamery first released cheddar cheese curds in July.
"We make plain cheddar curds, ranch flavored curds and Old Bay flavored curds.
"Once we got that process down we also started to make some cheese and put it away. It's part of the waiting game. Waiting to see how good it is once you put it in your aging cave."
"It takes a lot of time and effort by our students and our staff to get a product that we've wanted for so very long out on the shelves," said Shaw.
The release of Delaware Gold is just in time for Saturday's Homecoming Day festivities.
"I'm sure there will be cheese and ice cream throughout campus all weekend."
