A baby wouldn't stop crying, so a daycare worker suffocated her, according to court records obtained by WDEL.
Nineteen-year-old Dejoynay M. Ferguson of New Castle was charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 4-month-old baby girl at the Little People Child Development Center.
Delaware State Police were called to the facility at 3843 Wrangle Hill Road at 10:35 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2019.
Police said Ferguson was assigned to the Infant Room where she put on latex gloves, according to court documents, and "placed her hands over the victim's mouth and nose and intentionally restricted her breathing until she became unresponsive."
Video surveillance, according to court documents shows the baby lying on the changing table wriggling around. Three minutes later, the baby was lifeless.
Court records said Ferguson then placed the baby back into a crib and alerted the daycare's owner 20 minutes later the infant was unresponsive. They called 911. The baby was taken to Christiana Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to court records, Ferguson confessed to suffocating the baby.
She's been committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women's Correctional Institution in lieu of $1 million cash bond.
The Office of Childcare Licensing suspended Little People's facility license indefinitely as part of an ongoing investigation.
